Preparing to deal with Indian Attacks on Kashmir & Pakistan

Rejecting Pakistani gestures toward peace, India has stepped up its war in Kashmir. According to Indian government figures, 490 people have been killed in the Kashmir Valley in the first four months of this year. This number is dramatically higher than the number killed in the same period in 2001.

India seized much of Kashmir in 1947. In 1949, the United Nations Security Council decided that Kashmiris had the right to decide for themselves what their future would be. At that time, a UN-administered plebiscite was ordered but, all these years later, it has yet to be held.

Kashmiris have resisted Indian rule all along and there have been many upheavals and crises over the years. The current crisis dates from 1988 when the Indian central government imposed direct rule over Kashmir. Since then, Kashmiri's resistance has steadily escalated. Currently, India has an occupation army of at least 600,000 military and paramilitary troops in Kashmir making this area the most militarized zone on the planet.

The current crackdown on Kashmiris threatens to be the worse to date. Pak-Americans and their supporters need to educate others about the truth of the occupation of Kashmir and stand up for justice in this region.

PakAlert suggests the following things you can do to help:

Monitor the local media and look for the following points:

- If the news report is from a Delhi-based correspondent, call the news outlet and ask them to include a report from Islamabad as well.
- If Kashmir is shown as being a part of a country instead of as disputed territory, please point out this mistake.
- If a report focuses on tension between India and Pakistan being a result of terrorism, point out that the main conflict between these two nations is the status of Kashmir. Point out that the UN called for a plebiscite more than 50 years ago.
- If there is a failure to mention that both countries are nuclear powers, remind them.
- Make a phone tree (the person at the top calls two people and those two call two more, etc., etc.). Put the phone tree into action whenever there is a story that needs a response.
- Have your friends subscribe to PakAlert.net.
- Keep phone numbers of all local media handy.
- Keep the phone numbers of your members of Congress and Senate handy along with those for the White House and the State Department.
- Print and post the list at the end of this page in a prominent place.
- Start a campaign to motivate the pertinent agencies to intervene in the Kashmir crisis. Nobody wants nuclear war.
- Keep making dua so that Kashmiris, Pakistanis, and Indians remain safe from warfare.
- Contact Indian organizations in your city and ask them to make a statement against war and for the peaceful solution of the Kashmir issue.

Please contact your political representatives immediately and ask them to push for a cessation of hostilities on both sides. Also, encourage them to urge the use of international observers, many of whom are already in the surrounding area.
