Recently, the Chicago newspaper the Daily Herald ran a series of articles on India entitled "Passage to India: Stories of Suburban Immigrants" (http://www.dailyherald.com/special/passagefromindia/front.asp).

The first article (http://www.dailyherald.com/special/passagefromindia/paradiselost.asp) was about Kashmir and was very one-sided. It blamed Muslims and Pakistan for oppressing Kashmiri Hindu Pandits.

Another article on Hindu fascism (http://www.dailyherald.com/special/passagefromindia/hindu.asp) discussed the growth of Hindu fascists in the US, particularly in the Chicago area. It also tried to "balance" this information by blaming the Muslims of Gujarat for initiating the violence that killed 5,000 Muslims last year.

Action Requested

Please write to the newspaper (fencepost@dailyherald.com) and make the following points in your own words (please try not to cut and paste).

1. Thank you for exposing the growing danger of Hindu extremists and militants in the US.

2. The first article in the series about Kashmir was misleading. Contrary to what the article states, more than 90 percent of the 75,000 people killed in Kashmir are Muslim civilians.

3. Human rights groups report that the Indian army routinely rapes and tortures Muslims in Kashmir.

4. Many Indian human rights groups continue to accuse the Indian government of staging massacres of Kashmiri Hindus as part of the strategy to discredit Kashmiri freedom fighters .

5. India's occupation goes against UN resolutions and is the reason behind the Kashmiri freedom struggle. Recently , Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee admitted denying Kashmiris in Indian- occupied Kashmir free and fair elections.

6. A nuclear India ruled by Hindu fascists is a menace to world peace.
